The University of Exeter is collaborating with Ocean Power Technologies (OPT), a wave energy device developer, to exploit and further develop the results from this research. At present, however, technologies to extract and convert energy from the sea are far less advanced than other renewables, such as solar and wind, and remain as yet largely uncommercial without the intervention of government subsidy. The Finnish renewable technology company Wello announced at the end of February that it had successfully created a wave energy converter that had passed screening tests and was ready for full-scale deployment. Most schemes for extracting energy from oceans center around moving water: either waves or tides. Ocean Waves and Oscillating Systems - Linear Interactions Including Wave-Energy Extraction:. In spite of the enormous potential, the actual technology essential to convert tides plus ocean waves into electrical energy is experimental and sometimes still in development. Invest in safe, renewable forms of ocean energy -- including wind, wave, tidal and current power -- that will help secure our future prosperity, create thousands of new jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. OPT is planning for deployment of a Mark 3 PowerBuoy® wave energy conversion system off the coast of Oregon, and Mr. Watts, K.C.[1];Graham, J.W.[1];.
